Venice gondola experience

A gondola is one of the first things that come to mind when thinking of Venice. It is also one of the very frequent questions you ask when planning a photoshoot in the floating city. Here is everything you need to know before stepping aboard for a dreamy ride and the unforgettable moments on the water.                              Venice gondola photoshoot

Gondolas have been a symbol of Venice for over a thousand years, once serving as the primary mode of transport through the city’s canals. In the 16th century, they were lavishly decorated, but a later law mandated their iconic black color. Today, these elegant boats are steered by skilled gondoliers, preserving a rich tradition that continues to enchant visitors.

Photoshoot on a gondola

Riding the gondola down the Venetian canals is a truly unforgettable experience that deserves being photographed and preserved forever. Here the timing can make all the difference in capturing it the perfect way. During a morning session, we would hop on the gondola around 9:00am, just as the gondoliers begin their day. At this hour, the canals are still calm, with only a few gondolas and delivery boats passing by. This gives you the chance to experience the authentic charm of Venice without distractions.

For a sunset shoot, we would typically start the ride in the late afternoon in more remote parts of Venice. While this time offers a romantic vibe, it also means more activity on the canals, with increased demand for gondolas, especially on weekends, which could lead to waiting in a queue especially around the landmarks of Venice. By planning ahead and choosing the right time, rest assured that your gondola photoshoot will be unique, stylish, and filled with the essence of what Venice is.

Gondola Rides in Venice: hours, prices and essentials

Gondola boats in Venice operate daily, typically from 9:00 AM to late evening, though hours may vary by season, the weather, tides and gondolier’s availability. As of March 2025 the official base fare is 90 euros for a 30-minute ride (135 euros for 45-minutes) during the day and 110 euros after 7:00 PM (165 euros for 45 minutes) for an evening experience (current rates can be found here). Additional time can be arranged for an extra fee. Prices are per gondola, which can accommodate up to five passengers. While there are no strict rules, standing, switching seats, or excessive movement is discouraged for safety. There is no need to book a ride in advance, especially if we plan a morning session. After 9am, there are plenty of gondoliers around the city ready to make your Venice gondola photoshoot come true.

Can I hop on a gondola and ride anywhere I like?

No, gondolas follow fixed routes through Venice’s canals, so you can’t use them like a taxi to go anywhere you like. Each gondolier has designated paths, often chosen for their scenic beauty and calm waters, ensuring a smooth and picturesque ride. While you can request minor adjustments or specific landmarks along the way, major route changes aren’t possible.

However, specific routes can be arranged in advance under special terms, as was the case on the beautiful wedding day of Fernanda and Davide. Their very special story can be viewed here.

Do gondoliers sign during the ride?

Generally, gondoliers do not sing during the ride, as the majority, if not all, prefer to maintain a calm and relaxing atmosphere while navigating the canals. While there may be a rare exception if a gondolier is in a particularly good mood, singing is not the norm. If you specifically want a singer on the gondola, this must be arranged in advance. Some services offer this as an added experience, but it requires prior booking to ensure a musician is available for your ride.

Classy alternative to the gondola ride

For a more luxurious, classy and flexible alternative to gondolas, I encourage you to consider a private water taxi ride. Just imagine the early morning dreamy ride down the Grand Canal as Shadi and Berhad did. Unlike gondolas with fixed routes, water taxis offer complete flexibility, allowing us to explore any part of the city. When booked in advance, they can be reserved for any time, providing a sophisticated experience.

What makes the taxi ride so special?

The biggest advantage of a water taxi over a gondola is its flexibility and comfort. As already mentioned above, a water taxi can take you anywhere in Venice, offering a more personalized experience. Its route can be customized and adjusted even while we are already onboard taking photos. It’s faster, more private, and ideal for reaching specific destinations or exploring hidden canals. At the same time the ride can be arranged before 9am. If you’re looking for a luxurious, time-efficient ride with more control over your route, a water taxi is the perfect choice. To make best out of it, I always recommend booking a wooden taxi boat like Enrico’s, with whom I take most of the rides with my couples.
